Aritzo, a town of 1,300 inhabitants in the Barbagia di Belvì area, 70 kilometres from Nuoro, is a holiday resort, thanks to unspoiled nature, healthy air and a myriad of light water springs: the most popular are is Alinos and the funtana de sant'Antoni. A fifteenth-century church in the countryside is also dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua. In the village, houses with stone facades and wooden or wrought iron balconies overlook cobbled streets, lit up by the reflections of the sun. In the center stands the parish church of St. Michael the Archangel, the oldest part of which dates back to the year 1000. The restoration of 1917 gave it elegance and majesty, leaving intact the Gothic-Aragonese parts (XIV-XV). Inside it houses a myriad of works of art: paintings, statues, an eighteenth-century organ and an altar in polychrome marble. Outside, Bastione overlooks chestnut and hazelnut woods, where you can choose between hiking or horseback riding, to discover the natural monument Texile, a mushroom-shaped 'Dolomite' rock, and the domus de Janas of is Forros in Mont'e Susu. In front of San Michele, a flight of steps will take you to the seventeenth-century Spanish prisons, of maximum security until the mid-twentieth century – where Napoleon's French officers were also detained – characterized by an underpass called sa Bovida. Today they are the 'theatre' of Bruxas, a fascinating exhibition on witchcraft, instruments of torture and the Holy Inquisition in Sardinia. Also of great interest is the ethnographic museum of the Sardinian mountains which, through a heritage of traditional clothes, masks, craftsmen and cooking tools, reconstructs the agro-pastoral culture of Barbagia. Aritzo is also famous as the 'capital of chestnuts' and celebrates the primacy in the chestnut festival, at the end of October, a stage of Autumn in Barbagia. Also dating back to the seventeenth century is the charming Casa Devilla, in the historic center, not far from the Arangino castle, built in 1917 with exposed stone, according to medieval models. A mountain tourist centre, Aritzo is also based on sheep farming and handicrafts, which take shape from the wood of its endless chestnut groves. Sos maistos 'e linna produce famous cassepanche (cascie) and cutting boards, according to the carving technique. You will admire a collection of cascie, used for storing bread and linen, and the works of painting and engraving by the artist Antonio Mura in the town hall. For five centuries, an activity that has marked the history of the country has been practiced in the mountains, the 'snow industry' (of which Aritzo had obtained a monopoly from the Spanish tax authorities), collected in the domos de nie ('snowfields'), deep wells dating back to the seventeenth century, which you can admire in Funtana Cungiada, 1300 meters above sea level among ferns and junipers, near the church of Santa Maria della Neve. Until the beginning of the twentieth century, in summer, the niargios traded blocks of ice throughout the island and with them prepared sa carapigna, a sort of lemon sorbet, a famous local dessert, still today the protagonist of the island's festivals and especially of an Aritzese festival in mid-August. In the village, don't miss the fireworks of Sant'Antonio Abate in mid-January and the procession for San Basilio, at the beginning of September, accompanied by sos gosos, sacred songs of Spanish origin.
